Flu Shots Are in at 501 Pharmacy

October 14, 2018 By Han Su

It’s flu season which means it is time to get the flu shot! Make it a family affair and get everyone vaccinated. At 501 Pharmacy we are able to administer flu shots to patients 14 and up. We currently have plenty of vaccines available including high dose vaccines for those 65 years old and up. For patients that are under 14, our next door neighbor, Carolina Convenient Care, can administer shots to those who are six months and up.

Flu shots are just $35 for cash-paying patients but are generally free with most insurances. Keep reading for more on flu shots at 501 Pharmacy.

Why Should You Get the Flu Shot?

Influenza or the flu is a very serious disease that can lead to hospitalization or even death. Every flu season is unique and the flu affects everyone differently. Even a person who is very healthy can get sick from the flu or a flu-related illness and spread it to others.

Getting the flu shot is not just about protecting yourself, it also helps the community. When you get the flu shot, you are helping to keep higher-risk seniors and young children, who may not be able to get the vaccine, safe.

Who Should Get the Flu Shot?

Everyone who is six months or older should get the flu vaccine every season. These flu shots are also approved for use in pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions.

The only people who should not get a flu shot are those that are younger than six months of age or who have life threatening allergies to the flu vaccine or any ingredient that is in the vaccine. If you have an allergy to eggs or any of the ingredients in the vaccine, you should talk to your doctor about your allergy before getting the flu shot. If you are not feeling well, you should talk to your doctor about your symptoms before you get the flu shot or wait until you are feeling better.

No Appointments Needed

Stop by 501 Pharmacy Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., or on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., to get your flu shot with no appointment needed. Regular Dose Flu shots are just $39.99 for cash-paying patients and are free if you have Medicare B, TRICARE, or Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina.

You should get the flu vaccine before the flu begins spreading in your community. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the antibodies to develop in the body that protects against the flu. Get the vaccine before flu season officially begins and be protected throughout the season!

Grab Those Sunnies and the SPF – It’s UV Safety Month

July 19, 2018 By Han Su

Summer is in full swing which means most of us are out playing in the sun! Pool parties, beach vacations, playgrounds, and backyard barbecues are what the last couple of months of summer are all about. While it is a great idea to soak up that vitamin D – you need to make sure you are protecting you and your family in the process. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has declared July UV Safety Month, making this the perfect opportunity to learn a little more about UV rays and sun safety.

Murad’s Five S’s of Sun Sense

I stumbled across this list of ways to protect yourself from UV rays and I love how easy it is to remember them. Just keep in mind Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, and Slide.

  1. Slip on clothing to keep your body protected.
  2. Slop on sunscreen to all exposed areas of the body.
  3. Slap on a hat to keep your scalp, neck, and top of your head protected.
  4. Seek the shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest.
  5. Slide on protective eyewear to keep your eyes sun-safe.

Sunscreen

First things first, let’s dive into protecting your skin. Did you know skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States? People who get a lot of exposure to UV rays are at a greater risk for skin cancer. Though sunlight is the main source of UV rays, that does not mean you need to stop going outdoors. When you know you are going to be in the sun, make sure you put on sunscreen. Sunscreen should be thought of as your first line of defense against the sun. When choosing a sunscreen, make sure you read the label. Sunscreens with board spectrum protection and with sun protection factor (SPF) values of 30 or higher are recommended. Be sure to apply the sunscreen properly. About one ounce of sunscreen should be used to cover the arms, legs, neck, and face of an average adult.

Clothing

When you are out in the sun, it is best to wear clothing that will cover your skin. Dark colors generally provide more protection than light colors. If you can see light through a fabric, UV rays can get through. Wear a hat with at least a two-inch brim all around whenever you can. We recommend getting one with a UNC logo.

Sunglasses

Last but certainly not least, UV-blocking sunglasses are important for protecting the skin around the eyes, as well as the eyes themselves. Before you buy sunglasses, check the label to make sure they say something along the lines of “UV absorption up to 400 nm” or “Meets ANSI UV Requirements”.
